Sampson goes Anchoring
A True Story

One evening, after the sun had gone down, I was sitting on the bow of our sailboat, right next to the anchor. I wasn't at all concerned about being here, I had done this before. Maybe I should have noticed that we weren't in our slip nor were we at anchor but, I was having a great time being out in the fresh air. I was enjoying the scenery only a cat can see (it was way too dark for my people to see much!).

There seemed to be quite a ruckus going on behind me. I heard people scurrying around, talking about putting on harnesses, checking the children's covers, where is the CAT. Well, I should have perked my ears at this but, being the cat that I am I just continued to take in the view. I knew if they really wanted to find me they would.

I saw a few flying fish and way off in the distance there seemed to be a very large cruise ship. Boy, a cruise ship does use a lot of electricity. It looked like a floating city with hundreds of sparkling lights. There was plenty to see and plenty to hear, goodness, did I hear my name?

Sailboat Yes, that was my name, Sampson, they were definitely saying Sampson. I wondered why they were calling me, it certainly was not dinner time, I had just eaten. The boat wasn't very big, couldn't they see me sitting up, nice and proud, on the bow?

I was starting to get concerned. My people were making a lot of noise and they sounded worried. What should I do? I wasn't going to go running to them like a DOG! They were being so loud I knew they wouldn't hear me if I answered them. So, I decided I would hide. There was a dingy turned upside down on the bow of the boat and it was just perfect for hiding under.

My family was starting to make a search. They sounded frantic and were looking everywhere. They kept talking about "Cat Overboard". I don't know what that is but based on the sound of their voices I'm sure I don't want to find out. They circled me twice before they found me. The woman actually looked right at me and didn't see me. (I told you humans have poor eye sight!)

When my family finally discovered my hiding place, I was so proud of them. I knew they could find me if they would just try. They gave me lots of praise and petting. I know it was because I did such a good job of hiding! Now, everytime we go sailing they always call me "The Anchoring Cat".
